The Sparkle Box - Review and Giveaway

I've just finished reading The Sparkle Box, a children's book that truly touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. If you have a child, a grandchild, or even know a family with a child, I strongly recommend you give this book to them. It is truly a gift with the power to change Christmas for your children. The book comes with a sparkle box, so your family can begin this fabulous tradition. Even though my own children are nearly grown, I will definitely be filling my sparkle box every year.
The Sparkle Box is a beautifully written story about a young boy dreaming of Christmas. He sees the sparkle box in his home and asks his mom about it. She tells him they will open it on Christmas morning, but that they are filling it in the next few weeks. As they continue in their preparations for Christmas, Sam goes with his mom to help donate food and blankets. On a walk with his mother, they see a homeless man on a bench and he learns that some people have no home. At his father's work-sponsored holiday party, he learns that his family helped donate a clean water well to children who have none. Later we see Sam choose to donate something of his own to a stranger.
On Christmas morning, Sam is excited to see the gifts under the tree. He is excited to see the sparkle box there. The family opens the sparkle box together and Sam finds slips of paper inside, each one recording the good deeds they did for others in the spirit of Christmas, and in Jesus' honor because he gave us the greatest gift of all. I got goosebumps reading this book! It teaches children the real meaning of Christmas and I know that author Jill Hardie will bless hearts across the world with this story.
Disclosure: I received this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review.
You can visit the website HERE and view a book trailer HERE. You can purchase The Sparkle Box at the link below. One lucky US reader will also win The Sparkle Box. Must be 18 or older to win. Giveaway ends at midnight ET on 11/20/2012. To enter just fill in the Rafflecopter form below!

Shopping for a House

Something that's been occupying my mind the past couple months is the next house we will buy. Since my baby boys will go off to college next year, we'll have an empty nest. Since our current house is 3300 square feet, we already know we'll be selling it. I've been mulling over the things I want my next house to have and as I've poured over real estate listings, I've developed a list of parameters. Cosmetic condition really doesn't bother me because I'm sure I'll put my own personality stamp on whatever we buy, but there are some things I've decided I'm just not going to settle on. We know we're staying in the central Texas area, so the current listings are pretty indicative of what will be available in the spring when we're ready to sell and buy. After living in a two-story house since 2005, I've decided my next house must be a one-story. I truly hate the stairs when it's time to do laundry. We chose a two-story here because it was more convenient (and appropriate) to have bedrooms upstairs, given I run a home daycare downstairs. Since I'm retiring from daycare, there won't be people in and out of my house daily. We will probably need no more than 1500 square feet, maybe even closer to 1200 square feet. Less room means less cleaning and less clutter.
We will probably get a three bedroom, one master bedroom, one guest bedroom and one room for my office/scrapbooking room (Johnny gets the garage area for his projects). I'd like to get a layout where the master bedroom is away from the other two bedrooms, in the event either of our parents end up living with us. The master bathroom is probably the room I'm going to be most specific about requirements. I've always wanted a separate shower and bathtub in my master bathroom. A bathroom window is a bonus. A double bathroom vanity is something we've had in this house and is a must for the next house as well. The little shaven whiskers that tend to gather around his sink drive me crazy and I love having my own sink and counter area. I also want ceramic tile on the floor. Both houses I've owned have had carpeting in the master bath and I think it's ridiculous to have carpet in a wet area. Other than those, everything else is negotiable. A couple of things I'd also love to have include a big front porch, a big back porch, lots of trees, and lots of built-ins like bookshelves and a kitchen nook. But we can always make those changes ourselves once we're there. Can you tell I've been thinking about this a lot? What things are "musts" for your house?

Show Me Decorating DVD - Review

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the holiday decorations available this year, then you'll want to watch the Show Me Decorating DVD. It's a step by step guide created by sisters Becky McCraney and Kathy Harrison to help take the guesswork out of your holiday decor. If you're familiar with Miss Cacey's Christmas Store in West Texas, then you've probably already seen some of their magical decorating. In 2004, they even decorated the Christmas tree at the State Capitol!
This DVD is a compilation of their techniques and I really enjoyed the tips they offer for creating a themed tree. This is such a stressful time of year for many people and being able to follow their guide means I have one less thing to worry about! They also created a fabulous website with tons of information at http://showmedecorating.com/. You can even buy holiday decorations in their online shop. The Red and White Chandelier Package is one of my favorites! Pick up your Show Me Decorating DVD today!

SmartphoneTradeIn.com Charitable Partnership with Operation Gratitude

This Veterans Day, SmartphoneTradeIn.com (www.smartphonetradein.com) and Operation Gratitude (www.OperationGratitude.com) will launch a new program to raise money in support and appreciation of U.S. active military personnel and veterans. In this first-of-its-kind program, for every smartphone received for trade-in by SmartphoneTradeIn.com, the company will directly donate $5 to Operation Gratitude, to be used to provide care packages to veterans, U.S. troops and their families.
"We greatly appreciate the service of our veterans. This program marks the next evolution of our eight-year partnership with Operation Gratitude," said Marc Leff, Chief Operating Officer of SmartphoneTradeIn.com and its parent company, GRC Wireless. "Our program creates a win-win for consumers and Operation Gratitude - consumers can get up to $250 cash for their old smartphones, while helping raise an additional $5 per phone for Operation Gratitude."

"After over a decade of war, our veterans need our attention more than ever. We are deeply grateful for SmartphoneTradeIn.com's expanded support of our organization," said Carolyn Blashek, Founder and President of Operation Gratitude. "SmartphoneTradeIn.com will not only provide cash to consumers, but also give our supporters the satisfaction of facilitating a $5 donation to help veterans, active troops and their families, with every cell phone they trade in."

SmartphoneTradeIn.com's parent company, GRC Wireless, has been working with Operation Gratitude for eight years. Since 2006, Operation Gratitude has raised over $150,000 through GRC Wireless' cell phone donation and recycling programs. SmartphoneTradeIn.com is operated by one of the longest-running cell phone trade-in and buyback companies in North America. It offers consumers a fast, single web-page smartphone trade-in experience and sends checks back to consumers one or two days after receiving a phone.

SmartphoneTradeIn.com (www.smartphonetradein.com) helps consumers around the country quickly and easily trade-in their cell phones for cash. SmartphoneTradeIn.com is a program offered by independently owned and operated GRC Wireless (www.grcwireless.com), located in Miramar, Fla. GRC Wireless is one of the largest and longest-operating cell phone trade-in and buyback companies in North America and has bought back over six million cell phones since its founding in 2002. Thousands of consumers and more than 6,000 charitable organizations turn to the company for fast and competitively priced cell phone trade-ins.

Operation Gratitude (www.OperationGratitude.com) is one of the premier veterans and active duty service member charitable organizations in the U.S. The organization annually sends 100,000 care packages to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed in hostile regions, to their children left behind and to Wounded Warriors, Veterans and First Responders. The organization's mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service member's face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people. Each package contains donated product valued at $75-100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 865,000 packages to American Military members.

Goosebumps HorrorLand Game - Review

Got a gamer in your household? Here's a great choice for a Christmas gift! The Goosebumps HorrorLand game is rated E10 for Everyone over age 10. It's a creepy (not scary) amusement park full of familiar games with the Goosebumps twist. Scholastic is celebrating 20 years of thrilling families with creative Goosebumps stories and fun.
My 17 year old son loaded up Goosebumps HorrorLand Wii game to try it out. This video game is also available for NintendoDS and Playstation2. The object of this game, based on the R.L. Stein collection of Goosebumps books, follows a group of friends trapped in an evil theme park who must make their way through several challenging levels to escape.
It has five different park areas, 30 rides and attractions, and can be played story mode or arcade mode. After playing for couple hours, my son stated he felt the game was best geared towards age 8-15 years, but he really enjoyed the bumper cars game!
HorrorLand also has multi-player features so your kids can play together. There are tokens to earn and monster cards to collect. There is an actual story-line rather than just a bunch of random games to play. The graphics are great!
Watching him play for a while was even fun for me. I loved the Fortune Wheel game where the player goes running up the path and throws himself onto the wheel. It cracked me up every time! This is a great family game for those with older kids and teens. Add it to your Christmas list!

Tandoor Chef the #1 Frozen Indian Cuisine - Review

Tandoor Chef offers restaurant-quality Indian cuisine in the freezer section of the grocery store. From appetizers to breads to entrees, they also offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free foods. Tandoor Chef cuisine is a fabulous first step to introduce your children to Indian foods! These flavorful foods are both convenient and healthy. I decided to try the Tandoor Chef Palak (Saag) Paneer and Garlic Naan, as well as introduce it to my preschoolers to see what they thought.
The Palak (Saag) Paneer is a combination dish of spinach and cheese in a savory sauce. The Garlic Naan is a bread with garlic and coriander. Their products are all natural and made with wholesome ingredients. I heated both in the oven and served up plates for me and the children. I absolutely loved the Palak (Saag) Paneer and it fits perfectly into my current diet. Three of the four children were willing to try it and two of them really liked it. Another said it was too spicy and the other won't eat anything green. The Garlic Naan is very much like garlic bread and the children called it pizza bread. All four of them ate every bite of the Garlic Naan. I tasted just a bite of it since I'm avoiding carbs right now and it's very delicious! I'm so proud of the kids for trying Indian food and I'm glad we had the opportunity to expand our taste buds.
Go check out all the different selections at http://www.tandoorchef.com and be sure you take notice of their current Naan Pizza Contest, where you could win a year of Naan Pizza. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter too!

Education is a Gift that Lasts a Lifetime

This holiday season, few gifts will make as big of an impact on a child as the gift of education. Whether you’re gifting to a newborn or a freshman in high school, helping a child save for college could make a lifelong impact.

The College Savings Plans Network (CSPN) offers great tools and resources to help families make informed decisions about 529 plans including:

How it works: A 529 college savings plan is a state-administered plan that allows investors to save money in an account that is federal income tax free. A 529 account may be opened by anyone and contributions can be made conveniently through payroll deduction or automatic transfers from a bank account with minimum contributions as low as $15. Relatives or family friends can all be account owners, or you can simply choose to contribute to an existing account.

The benefits of 529 gifting: One of the biggest benefits to opening a 529 account is the tax-free advantages. All money grows federal and state income-tax free and all withdrawals used for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition, books, supplies, and more are exempt from federal income tax. Not only can the student see the benefits, so can the contributor. Many states offer tax deductions to contributors who gift to an in-state program, and in some states for contributions to any 529 plan. These deductions or credits must be made by end of year and contributors can contact the individual state’s program to determine the state tax rules when investing in a 529 plan.

Plus find out: how to choose the plan that’s right for you (including a college cost calculator and a comparison tool), the long term advantages, and why it’s important.

Quit Smoking with NICOmate Ecigs - Review

YES! You CAN quit smoking using electronic cigarettes! I did! I smoked most of my adult life and even started at age 12. Everyone in my family smoked my entire life, so it's no wonder I did too. Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It's also one of the hardest things you will ever try to do. Honestly, I hated the taste of cigarettes, but I loved the ACT of smoking. When I was younger, it made me feel "cool" and "grown-up" but as soon as I got pregnant with my first child, I was able to quit cold-turkey. It was 9 years before I stupidly picked one up to smoke when I was out drinking at a bar and it's been a roller-coaster of stopping and starting since then. I discovered electronic cigarettes and learned they are SAFE to use, especially when compared to all the years I've put poisons in my body with regular smokes. I've been using ecigs for a month and I can proudly say I no longer want a cigarette.
NICOmate premium electronic cigarettes can help you quit smoking. You simply replace your regular cigarettes with ecigs. Your body will still get the nicotine it craves, you will still get to enjoy the act of smoking, and you will get to enjoy a wider, tastier range of "smoking" flavors. You WON'T stink, you won't be causing second-hand smoke, you won't be polluting your own lungs, and you won't stain your teeth. That's because NO smoke is produced; instead the cartomizer (the part that looks like the filter) creates a harmless vapor. They produce no carcinogens and no carbon monoxide. Even if you never smoked in your home, you can use ecigs in the house! No more standing outside in the searing summer heat or the freezing winter cold! NICOmate offers cartomizers in the following flavors: tobacco, menthol, mint, apple, vanilla and strawberry.
The battery (the part that looks like the tobacco paper) is rechargeable. The NICOmate starter kit comes with all the following: 1 standard high capacity lithium ion rechargeable ecigarette battery (200 mAh), 1 extended life high capacity battery (280 mAh), 1 USB E-Cigarette Charger, 1 E-Cigarette Wall Charger, 10 disposable nicotine cartomizers (tobacco flavor) - equivalent to 10 packs of cigarettes and 300 puffs, Instruction manual + E-cig Lifetime Warranty Card, and a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee. I like that NICOmate comes with two different ways to charge the batteries, either via a wall plug or via my computer.
You can even try NICOmate with their FREE TRIAL OFFER. So, what do I think of NICOmate? I've tried three different ecig brands since I quit smoking a month ago and NICOmate is great. I especially love the strawberry flavor! By the way, one of the worries of people who consider quitting is the possible resulting weight gain. I've lost 14 pounds in 25 days (not attributed to my ecig use of course but the flavors DO satisfy my sweet tooth). Do yourself and your family a favor and check out http://www.nicomate.com. Be sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter, then enter below to win a complete NICOmate Starter Kit, a value of $80!

Inbru Coffee Flavors - Review

Did you know that I was in my forties before I ever had my first cup of coffee? Yes, really! I've only been a coffee drinker for four years and I cannot believe I ever survived without it! Even worse, I'm kind of a coffee snob, meaning I only drink it black and it must taste fabulous on its own merits. It's nearly impossible for me to drink coffee away from home. I also don't want the added calories or other stuff of creamers or sugars. My regular blend at home is an 80/20 mix of two coffees, a medium roast and a mocha coffee. I've heard so much about the flavored coffees people love to drink this time of year, but am very wary of the extra calories, carbs, and sugars. Not to mention the outrageous cost of a single cup of coffee in some of those famous coffee joints!
Then, I discovered Inbru Coffee Flavors and my coffee world turned upside down. Inbru is the sugar-free, fat-free, carb-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, and calorie-free way to enjoy flavored coffee! The Inbru granules look sort of like coffee crystals, but they are full of wonderful flavors. All I had to do was add one tiny little scoop of Inbru to my regular coffee crystals in the filter, brew it like I always do, and suddenly I have these incredibly delicious flavored coffees that I can drink all day long. Best of all, one jar of Inbru makes 80 cups of flavored coffee for less than the cost of just two flavored coffees at my local coffee shop! It is only about 1/3 the cost of the mix I've personally been using for the last few years at home. It also has a full one-year shelf life.
I've tried the Pumpkin Pie and the Chocolate Fudge flavors so far, and they are scrumptious! Even better, there is just enough sweetness in the taste that it curbs any possible cravings I might have for sweets, which is fantastic since I'm on a diet! There are sixteen flavors and I will definitely be ordering more. I can't wait to try the Peppermint Stick, Coconut Creme, and Butterscotch Drop. These would be fabulous Christmas gifts for your favorite coffee lover! You can shop online at http://www.inbru.com and follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Then enter below to win your choice of any flavor Inbru Coffee Flavor!
Win a jar of Inbru in your favorite flavor!
To enter, just fill in the Rafflecopter form below. You must be at least 18 years old and reside in the USA. Only the first entry is mandatory; bonus entries will increase your chance to win. This giveaway ends at midnight ET on 11/18/2012. Good luck!
