South Austin, located in the Southpark Meadows area, at 9900 South IH-35. Two more will be opening in Austin soon! I got to sit down and sample several delicious meals with founder Tom Ryan, and even watch him demonstrate the Smashburger kitchen secrets that make their burgers superior.
If you want a more mainstream Smashburger, you can choose from the Classic Smash and the All American Cheeseburger, both with American cheese, onion, and pickles. The All American also features ketchup and yellow mustard, while the Classic Smash also features lettuce, tomato and their own smash sauce.
The Spicy Baja will make your mouth dance. This Smashburger is topped with pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, spicy chipotle mayo and fresh jalapenos on a spicy chipotle bun. It's delicious and my favorite runner-up!
The Buffalo Chicken Smashburger will delight your mouth. This one features Frank's RedHot Buffalo sauce and crumbled blue cheese, plus lettuce, tomato and onion on an egg bun. This is a delicious treat you won't soon forget.
If you think you might have room for some side dishes, Smashburger sides are wonderful. Their Sweet Potato Fries with sea salt are delicious!
I really love their Fried Jalapenos served with buttermilk ranch dressing. I always feel less guilty about eating fried foods if they are vegetables!
Their Fried Pickles are a treat I've never tasted before and I really like them. Served up with buttermilk ranch dressing, they are a wonderful side dish.
The Haystack Onions are served with a spicy dipping sauce. Unlike regular onion rings, Smashburger uses thin onion slices that make them perfect for topping your burger too.
Watching your weight? Be sure to try the Veggie Frites, flash-fried carrots sticks and green beans. They are so good!
Yes, you can get a salad too. This gigantic Baja Cobb Salad includes fresh greens, bacon, cheddar, tomato, onion, guacamole, jalapenos and a spicy chipotle salad dressing. They'll even top it with their amazing chicken if you wish.
Meet Tom Ryan, the founder and chief concept officer of Smashburger. He's a culinary genius in my opinion. He walked us back to the kitchen to show us their secret to delicious Smashburgers.
Their Smashburgers start out as a soft ball of Angus beef, not squeezed or strained, to ensure the freshness stays in the meat. Putting a bit of butter on the hot grill, Tom showed us how they place the meat on it, then quickly cover it then press down with the smashing tool.
Holding it in place, they press the meat down onto the grill, searing the juices inside, for a very specific amount of time. When the juices bubble up like the bubbles on a perfect pancake, the Smashburger is flipped over.
Adding their own special blend of spices ensures that every Smashburger is unique from any other you've tasted. By the way, this kitchen smells absolutely amazing!
When finished searing, the perfect Smashburger looks like this before it gets all the goodies added to it. Their menu allows customers to create their own special combinations, with choices for the bun, the toppings, the sauces, and different cheeses.
